Telegraph 2025 Young Writer of the Year Inspires Students

English Literature students get feedback on their work from award-winning author, Harriet Baker.

Year 12 English Language students met with author Harriet Baker, winner of the Telegraph 2025 Young Writer of the Year Award before their well-earned Easter break.

Harriet spoke to the class via video link, about her path through education, her experience of university and choosing to do a PhD. She talked about her book ‘Rural Hours’ and what inspired her to write about a time in the lives of Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Rosamond Lehmann. She discussed the genre, ‘creative non-fiction’ and the writing techniques she loves to write in.

Harriet answered questions from the group, then set a challenge for the students to do a short piece of ‘creative non-fiction’ of their own which she will read and critique.

A fantastic opportunity for students to speak to a prize winning author and to get her feedback on their work. Thank you to Ms Crisp for organising such a special opportunity for our Sixth Form community.
